What’s in a smile? Well,
in the old days it was just teeth, but nowadays it’s teeth and jewellery
- dental jewellery that is. This is the latest fashion statement
to hit the streets after body piercing and tattoos.
Dental jewellery in the shape of real gold and real gold & gem designs
have been seen on well-known artists such as Mick Hucknall of Simply
Red and Mel C of the former Spice Girls. And expectations are that
it will catch on fast among the fashion conscious in South Africa.
The trend started in Europe a couple of years ago with designs that
feature anything from a star to dolphins and butterflies. New designs
are developed on an ongoing basis to suit the different needs and
tastes of the different population groups, females as well as males.
Dental Associations all over the world are endorsing this new trend
in fashion. Fitting is a simple procedure involving etching the
tooth surface and sticking the piece of jewellery to the enamel
of the tooth. It can also easily be removed and the tooth surface
repolished with no damage to the natural tooth.
The product can be fitted by dentists and any health-and-beauty
related operators - which means an increase in visits to these service
providers/operators. This will have the added spin-off that people
will get a thorough check-up and receive any other treatment they
might need or want before the jewellery is actually fitted.
It is believed that 1 to 2% of the European population will wear
the product within the next five years.
And as in the case of many other fashions, this new trend is already
available and manufactured in 22 carat gold in South Africa under
the brand name iZi Stick-on Jewellery. The name is derived from
the Xhosa word “Izinyo”, meaning “tooth”.
The attached brochure shows all the designs available to the South
African market and each of these designs can be fitted on either
dentures or natural teeth.
